NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--A new brokerage model combining aspects of a big wirehouse and an independent registered investment advisory has caught the industry's attention as it tempts brokers looking for a new place to work. While dwarfed in size by traditional brokerages, firms like SeaCrest Wealth Management and HighTower Advisors see their hybrid brokerage approach as a way to recruit advisers from bulge brackets.

"There are so many people watching these firms to see how they do, and they are doing well," says Bing Waldert, research director at Cerulli Associates. He said changes at the big traditional brokerages have made it easier to lure away advisers. "I think we'll see a lot more of these non-traditional options."

When breakaway broker Robert Sayler defected from Morgan Stanley on a Friday afternoon in the spring of 2008, he left a 14-year wirehouse career behind him. Hours later, the 47-year-old advisor had hung up a new shingle: SeaCrest Wealth Management.

His phone and e-mail systems were up and running. Pens, paper and file folders had been placed neatly in his desk. The just-delivered fridge and coffee maker were at the ready as was a new full-time assistant, supplied — like everything else — by SeaCrest. Health and dental insurance? Check. Trading platform?
